Answer to Question 1

High-risk strains of HPV are responsible for an estimated 70 percent of cases of cervical cancer in women, possibly because infection causes cell changes, called dysplasia, that lead to cancer. The majority of cases of precancerous cervical dysplasia that are left untreated progress to cervical cancer. HPV also causes oropharyngeal (mouth and throat) cancers, with over 80 percent of people affected indicating they have had oral sex. Men are four times more likely than women to develop oropharyngeal cancers.
