Handwashing is an important mechanism for reducing the risk of transmitting an STI. Both HSV and HPV can be transmitted from a site of infection to an individual's hands and then to his or her partner's body. Handwashing is important during masturbation and mutual masturbation, petting, and oral, vaginal, and anal sex. Use soap and water, washing for at least 20 seconds, before and after sexual contact.
