The drug circulates throughout the body until crossing the blood-brain barrier and reaching receptor sites in the brain. There, the drug can affect cognition, emotions, and physiological functioning. After a period of activity, it dissipates and circulates to the liver, where it is metabolized. The breakdown products (metabolites) are excreted through the kidneys (urine), bowels (feces), skin (sweat), and lungs (in exhaled breath).
