When the urge to smoke hits, people trying to quit can try deep breaths, taking a drink of water, doing something else, and delay (telling themselves they'll wait and smoke in ten minutes if the urge has not subsided). They can also keep mouth toys handy as substitutes for cigarettes. These include hard candy, chewing gum, toothpicks, or carrot or celery sticks.
