The human body is 50-70 percent water by weight. The water in our system is both held within and bathes our cells. Chemical reactions on which life depends require water. Water aids in fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance, and helps to regulate body temperature. Water is the major component of blood, which carries oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and other substances to body cells and removes metabolic wastes.
Individual fluid needs vary according to dietary factors, age, size, overall health, environmental temperature and humidity levels, and exercise. General recommendations are 9 cups of water and other beverages per day for women and 11 cups per day for men.
