 Physical reasons. Many students reported engaging in sex as a form of stress relief, or for exercise, or purely because of a desire for the physical experience.
 Emotional reasons. Love, commitment, communication, and desire to express feelings of closeness and gratitude were frequent motivators.
 Insecurity. Many students reported feeling pressure to be sexually activeeither from a partner, or from the peer group in general. Others wanted to feel more attractive, mature, or powerful, or to prevent a breakup.
 Goal achievement. Some students engaged in sex to achieve a goal: pregnancy, increased social status, or even revengefor instance, engaging in sex with a new partner to punish an established partner for openly flirting with a rival at a party.
