Answer to Question 1

Answer: Poverty is an obstacle to receiving quality health care. Poor Americans are more likely to lack health insurance, as well as to engage in behaviors that increase cancer risk, such as smoking, physical inactivity, and poor diet. A 2007 ACS study estimates that, healthcare being equal, 37 of cancers deaths could have been avoided. Ethnic groups and minorities, (compared to Caucasians,) have higher death rates in the majority of all cancers except breast cancer. In that issue, Caucasian women have higher rates than any other ethnic group.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Answers should include reference to Antonia's relative risk for breast cancer being high due to her family's history, and that she should be having breast cancer screenings. They should include adjusting her drinking habits and making sure she is protected from any fumes or hazardous chemicals in her workplace. Answers may also include examples of types of cancers for which Antonia is at risk, along with any specific screening for them.
