Personality  A low tolerance for stress, poor impulse control, and a reduced ability to learn from negative consequences.
Psychiatric disorders  People with clinical depression, bipolar disorder, or anxiety disorder have a higher risk for addiction.
Age  The earlier a person begins to experiment with drugs, the more likely he or she is to progress of addiction.
Gender  Although men are more likely to use and abuse drugs, women are more likely to become addicted.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Perhaps the most fundamental characteristic of addiction is craving. Another characteristic is loss of pleasure, the addict receiving very little satisfaction from the substance or activity. Without treatment, addiction is invariably progressive with the negative behaviors becoming more frequent and severe.
