 The development of tolerance
 The experience of withdrawal symptoms
 Using the substance in larger quantities or over a longer period than intended
 Inability to cut down or control use of the substance
 Spending inordinate amounts of time on activities aimed at obtaining or using the substance, or recovering from its effects
 Sacrificing important social, occupational, or recreational activities due to the substance use
 Continued use despite knowledge that the substance has caused or exacerbated a physical or psychological problem
