Answer to Question 1

Answer: Many of the factors that promote eating disorders are the same for males and females, such as low self-esteem, depression, traumatic events or abuse in the past, or participating in a sport that values thinness. However, unlike women, men who develop eating disorders tend to have been overweight in the past. Men also tend to have higher levels of sexual anxiety than women with eating disorders.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: The media provides conflicting messages about food and weight. While we are surrounded by ads selling calorically dense foods, we are also surrounded by ads promoting thinness and fitness. For some people, this contributes to an unhealthful approach to eating and appearance.
