Answer: The pons is responsible for inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters necessary for large-scale muscle movement; it is a protective mechanism that prevents the sleeper from physically acting out dreams. Although body movement is reduced, respiration, auditory nerves, and eye muscles continue to function.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Stage 1: falling asleep; Stage 2: light sleep; Stage 3: beginning of deep sleep; Stage 4; deep sleep; Stage 5: dreaming occurs (REM sleep only present in Stage 5)
