Answer to Question 1

Answer: Release of stress hormones causes the heart to work harder and faster, raising blood pressure. Over time, high blood pressure can damage blood vessels and internal organs, greatly increasing the risk of a heart attack or stroke. Stress can also promote cardiovascular disease indirectly by prompting unhealthful coping mechanisms.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Chronic stress is an important risk factor for many mental health problems. For example, over the past 20 years, research has increasingly suggested the existence of a complex and reciprocal relationship between stress and depression. Anxiety is a normal response to stressful situations; however, stress itself may also contribute to the development of anxiety disorders. In addition, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop when people are exposed to very traumatic forms of stress, such as violence, deadly natural disasters, or combat.
