Both parties may be anybody, including governments, corporations and individual persons.

In some state court systems, a majority vote of the jury is required to win a decision. Some state court systems require a unanimous jury decision.
The burden of proof is preponderance of the evidence, which is defined as more likely than not.
Either party may appeal in a civil case.
The plaintiff and the defendant may both be found partially right and partially at fault.
