Answer to Question 1

Prepurchase exams are a common practice and present unique challenges for record creation, management and documentation standards. These exams are common place for performance use, economic, food production animals of the large animal hospital affecting the following species i.e. equine (horses), bovine (cattle), ovine (sheep), caprine (goats), porcine (pigs). They are occasionally still referred to as breeding soundness examinations. The relationship between the examiner, the buyer, the seller, and agents for either the buyer or the seller can be complicated. It is crucial then, that the relationships are established correctly at the time the appointment is set up and or when the animal presents to the facility during the admission process. An incorrect relationship and record creation can have an adverse impact then if/when the owner/agent/representative requests information. State veterinary boards may address this issue in their regulations. In the best interests of the animal, the owner is responsible for authorizations and consents until the sale is final.
