Explain the usefulness of cancer staging (i.e., describing the size and/or extent of the primary tumor and whether or not cancer has spread in the body).

How often do hospital cancer registries collect and update information on the status of patient's cancer?

Answer to Question 1

Cancer staging assists clinically by helping the physician when planning treatment. Staging assists pathologically by assessing the effect and need for neoadjuvant/adjuvant therapy. Staging also is useful when assessing screening patterns for population-based cancer registries.
