The objective of UM is to maintain quality while ensuring appropriate utilization of services. The UM program should be a component of the organization-wide QM/PI effort. Accurate data are crucial for a successful UM program. A facility must be able to accurately determine the costs of providing care and assess current levels of utilization. Careful monitoring of staff time and supply and equipment costs must be done initially to establish a baseline figure for health service costs.
