Answer to Question 1

Any correctional institution that is deemed to be a covered entity would have to appoint a privacy officer, to promulgate policies and procedures protecting the privacy of inmate health information, and to allow inmates access to their health records as a general rule.

Answer to Question 2

Coding of diseases and procedures is not done routinely in DOCs, jails, or juvenile detention centers, but the FBP does utilize the current modification of ICD for tracking morbidity and mortality. Classification in correctional facilities relates to the categorization of offenders according to established criteria for making housing and job assignments as well as determining security status and developing educational or rehabilitation programs. Typically, the criteria include age, sex, legal status (e.g., pretrial, detention, sentenced), and inmates' physical and mental health status.
