Answer to Question 1

In hemodialysis, the patient's blood circulates outside the body (extracorporeally) through an artificial kidney, which performs the dialysis function. Peritoneal dialysis uses the patient's own abdominal cavity to filter out wastes.

Answer to Question 2

The ESRD facility treats patients who have end-stage renal disease, typically through some form of dialysis. The ESRD network processes and analyzes data provided by the ESRD facilities and provides other types of services, such as patient education.
