Air abrasion can remove small amounts of a tooth; it involves aiming high-speed particles at the tooth. It can be used for the removal of cavities, removal of defects in the enamel, and detection of cavities in fissures by opening them for inspection. It is relatively painless. It removes less of the tooth than a traditional drill.
