ICD--9--CM diagnoses codes are required on insurance claims to justify the need for the procedure or service performed. ICD --9--CM is also used to track and create statistics about causes of death. Students might also remember that the first two volumes provide a listing and an index ofdiagnosis codes and that the third volume lists codes for hospital inpatient procedures.Students might also add that diagnosis codes can be used as keys to protocols and care plans.
