One approach to containing infectious disease currently being explored is called syndromic surveillance, which uses health-related data that precede diagnosis and signal a sufficient probability of a case or an outbreak. Syndromic surveillance can be used, for example, in shelters where there are no medical personnel; people can look out for signs and symptoms (e.g., diarrhea) and report them. New York City's syndromic surveillance program looks for unusual patterns of disease inemergency rooms.
