Answer to Question 1

False
RATIONALE: Slavery has not yet died out in the region. In Mauritania (where slavery was outlawed only in 1981), the practice remains widespread throughout the country; between 100,000 and 600,000 black Mauritanians are currently enslaved, primarily by lighter-skinned Arab and Berber Mauritanians (a similar situation exists in neighboring Mali, with about 200,000 southern black Malians enslaved by northern Tuaregs). Enslavement of children persists in West Africa.
