Ukraine is blessed with an abundance of fertile black earth soils, especially in the steppe region south of Kiev. Historically, Ukraine has been a great bread- basketespecially of globally important wheatalong with barley, livestock, sunflower oil, beet sugar, and many other products.
Ukraine also has a generous endowment of industrial raw materials, especially coal and iron ore, located mainly in the country's east.
It wanted the warm water port of Sevastopol.
It wants to establish a buffer zone between itself and the Far Abroad..
