Answer to Question 1

A seismograph is based on the principle of inertiaan object at rest tends to stay at rest, and an object in motion tends to stay in motion. A seismograph has a weight that is freely suspended from a base that is securely attached to the bedrock. When the ground shakes, the base moves with the ground, and the weight, not in motion, remains stationary.
