The basic division between a capitalist West and a communist East has been replaced by a greater complexity. There is a latent level of mistrust between China, Japan, and South Korea; China and the rest of the world remains divided over the Taiwan issue; tensions remain high between North and South Korea especially with North Korea's testing of nuclear weapons.
