The former Soviet Union was composed of 15 autonomous republics, each formed in part on
particular cultural/ethnic groups. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, these republics
achieved independence. Geopolitical trends for the past two decades have been influenced by the
ability (or inability) of these former republics to re-establish relationships with Russia. Those
cultural areas that have not yet achieved independence continue to pose problems for Russia.
