Answer to Question 1

While in many countries women are constrained by laws or social norms from achieving the same levels of education as men, and of accessing paid employment, there is also indication that women's roles and status are changing rapidly throughout the region, even within very conservative Islamist societies. Women widely participated in the Arab Spring rebellions. The consequences of such activism is variedfor some countries it has meant that women are able to veil after many years of restrictions (Libya). For others it has meant greater freedom of expression (Egypt). The situation in Algeria is illustrativeyounger generations of women are more likely to be religious and to veil than their parents, but Algeria has very high rates of education, employment and public service for women. 70 of the lawyers in Algeria are women and 60 of its judges are womenillustrating the complex dichotomies that exist for women in the changing social landscape of the region.
