A dimension of Carnival is the transcendence of roles and role-playing in general. Since the Caribbean had a strict racial and non-compromising if not demeaning treatment of slaves in the plantation economic model, Carnival became an outlet for the oppressed to celebrate and display humanity in a difficult scenario.
