The majority of people in the Russian Domain live in the western-most part of the region, where the climate is more moderate. Relatively few people live in the eastern part of the region and Siberia is especially sparsely populated because of the long frigid winters and permafrost. Settlements in the eastern part of the region are located mainly along the Trans-Siberian rail line.
