Answer to Question 1

First, the increasing diversity of our nation's students is one firm trend. Second, increasing numbers of students from low-income backgrounds are entering our nation's schools. It is a virtual certainty that teachers who begin their careers in our country today will have students whose backgrounds vary in culture, ethnicity, and native language. Further, it's highly likely that some students will be children of poverty. This diversity presents both challenges and opportunities for a rich learning experience for all students.

Answer to Question 2

Neuroplasticity suggests that our brains are capable of rewiring themselves in response to enriching experiences. In other words, environmental experiences can result in students literally becoming smarter. This is very good news. It suggests that learning problems, at least to a certain extent, can be overcome.
