Answer to Question 1

All you need for dunes to form is an abundance of sand, a lack of stabilizing vegetation, and wind. In
non-desert coastal dune fields, the sand supply simply overwhelms the vegetation.

Answer to Question 2

Global atmospheric circulation moves air masses across the Atlantic Ocean. The prevailing wind
direction is toward the west because there is a general westward convergence of airflow toward the
equator due to the Coriolis effect. These winds are called the trade winds. They occur both north and
south of the equator.
