The advantage is that it is efficient. The drawbacks fall under the heading of destruction of the land.
Hydraulic mining increases downstream flooding, clogs irrigation systems, and ruins farmland. In
addition, there are negative impacts to the biosphere, such as mercury contamination from gold
extraction operations and destruction of spawning grounds for various fish species
