Answer to Question 1

Answer: Intensity cannot be used in uninhabited areas. Intensity cannot indicate whether the earthquake was nearby (and small) or far away (and large). Intensity does not indicate whether the earthquake alone was large enough to cause the damage or if the damage occurred because of shoddy construction.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Intensity is a measure of ground shaking based on property damage. Magnitude is a quantitative measurement that estimates the amount of energy released at the source of the earthquake.
