Answer to Question 1

Answer: Sulfur dioxide will bond with water droplets in the atmosphere, creating reflective aerosols of sulfuric acid. These aerosols will reflect incoming solar radiation, and the result is cooling temperatures in the short term.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: The exterior of the lava flow cools, but the interior is still hot and fluid (rocks are poor conductors of heat). The fluid lava drains away, leaving the hollow tubes behind.
