Answer to Question 1

Answer: (Ignoring nucleation sites, which can speed up the formation of large crystals) The general rule of thumb is the deeper the magma, the more preexisting rock surrounds and insulates it. Because the heat is retained longer, cooling occurs at a slower rate, which allows the atoms and molecules to move around more freely and combine to produce mineral crystals. This rate of intrusive cooling produces larger, visible mineral crystals.
