What evidence can you identify in either photograph that indicates that the end of the glacier was once farther downslope than it was in 1955?

The lake that exists down valley of the glacier is consistent with a glacially-scoured depression. Close examination shows former end moraines located down valley of the glacier

Ice flows under its own weight with slippage along weak planes within ice crystals and also slippage along the base of the glacier where it rests on rock or regolith, if the glacier is not frozen to its base. This means that the glacier moves both by sliding at the base and flow within the glacier itself. Measured rates of glacier motion are mostly between 2 m and 8 km per year, with the fastest glaciers exhibiting most of their motion by sliding at the base.
