Answer to Question 1

Geologists drill wells, which allow water to flow upwards once the water table has been reached. Multiple wells are required to understand the variation of the water table in the area.

Answer to Question 2

Flash floods are short-lived flooding events that result from high-intensity rainfall in small, steep drainage basins. Prolonged floods are long-lived flooding events that build gradually in intensity and occur over days or weeks. Prolonged floods result from prolonged heavy rain over the large drainage basins typical of large rivers.
