Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
A patient with ALS will become completely ventilator dependent and depend on life support from the ventilator. A patient with flail chest due to trauma is acutely ill and usually can be weaned in the intensive care unit. A patient with severe exacerbation of asthma requires ventila-tion only for a short time, until the exacerbation has resolved. Patients with ARDS require inten-sive care and usually are not sent home with ventilators.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
The overall goal of LTMV at home or in other alternative care sites is to improve the patient's quality of life by enhancing the individual's living potential; improving the patient's physical and physiological level of function; reducing morbidity; reducing hospitalizations; extending life; and providing cost-effective care. The other options are the goals of acute mechanical ventilation.
