In central sleep apnea, there is essentially no chest wall or abdominal effort detected during epi-sodes/events due to a problem with the signal from the brain, while such effort is present and may increase in obstructive sleep apnea.

These devices are referred to as auto-CPAP, intelligent CPAP, or smart CPAP. These de-vices use a computer algorithm for adjusting the level of CPAP in response to dynamic changes in airflow and/or vibration secondary to snoring.
