Fasting in required because if feeding in continued result will reflect the patient's energy ex-penditure in response to feeding and may be high if patient is being overfed. It may also register high if there has been recent physical activity. The UUN collection is used if determination of carbohydrate, fat, and protein utilization is desired.

The two most important ways to minimize the likelihood of aspiration are (1) to raise the head of the bed at least 45 degrees and (2) to deliver the feeding beyond the pylorus using the continu-ous drip method.
