Alveolar inflammatory processes (pneumonia), pulmonary vascular congestion (congestive heart failure), and pulmonary edema stimulate these receptors. This stimulation caus-es rapid, shallow breathing; a sensation of dyspnea; and expiratory narrowing of the glottis.
