The patient valve serves the function of an exhalation valve and contains the antiasphyxia valve. If the flow setting is insufficient for the inspiratory demands of the patient, the antiasphyxia valve allows room air to be entrained for additional flow. When air entrainment occurs, the valve creates a whistling sound.
