Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
Chilling the blood specimen to below 5 C by placing the syringe in ice water can reduce the metabolic rate of the white blood cells. The ice bath does keep the specimen cold, but the pur-pose of keeping it cold is to reduce the in vitro metabolism rate.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
Nasogastric suctioning can cause an acute metabolic alkalosis.
