Answer to Question 1

ANS: C
Endotracheal intubation increases a patient's susceptibility to Staphylococcus aureus, as well as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacteriaceae species, and Candida. Pneumocystis carinii is common in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Patients with systemic lupus er-ythematosus, liver failure, or vasculitis are susceptible to Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
Human immunodeficiency virus is transmitted by direct contact. Tuberculosis and diphtheria are spread by droplet nuclei. Hepatitis B is spread by indirect contact. Legionellosis is spread by air-borne aerosols.

The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
