You are caring for a patient on a cardiac rehab unit. After exercising he reports chest tightness and pain in his jaw, he appears pale, and he says he feels like he is going to throw up. You are aware the patient has a diagnosis of angina. What do you do?

Answer to Question 1

Assist the patient into a safe, comfortable position to rest. Angina often dissipates in minutes with rest. Stay with the patient. Have someone notify the nurse and obtain a set of vital signs.

Answer to Question 2

Autonomic hyperreflexiathis autonomic nervous system overreaction to stimulus can be life threatening. It can elevate blood pressure and lead to stroke, seizure, heart attack, and even death.
