The steps in this procedure include (1) Remove the metal or plastic cover from the vial and cleanse the rubber port with an alcohol swab to disinfect it. (2) Remove the needle cap and draw an amount of air into the syringe that is equal to the amount of medication that will be withdrawn from the vial. (3) Insert the needle through the center of the rubber stopper and inject air into the vial, keeping the needle above the solution. Invert the vial. (4) Steady the vial and syringe in the nondominant hand at eye level. Brace the little finger against the plunger. (5) Move the needle into the solution. (6) Use the dominant hand to pull back on the syringe's plunger. (7) Withdraw an accurate dose into the syringe. Remove the needle from the vial.
