Several factors must be considered for an antibiotic to be effective. It should not cause an adverse or allergic reaction, nor should it affect the normal flora (normal and useful bacteria) that usually reside in the human body. An antibiotic must be soluble in water and must diffuse readily into body tissue. Furthermore, if given orally, it should be well absorbed by the GI tract. Finally, it should not be antagonistic to other antibiotics.
