Air passing through secretions present in the air passages causes stertorous breathing, but does not cause a hissing, crowing sound. Partially blocked air passageway causes snoring, which is not a hissing, crowing sound. Snoring is common during sleep, when the person's tongue falls back as a result of relaxation.
