A medication called disulfiram (Antabuse) is sometimes used as aversion therapy or adverse conditioning in the chronic alcoholic who is unable to maintain sobriety. It is used only if the client is preoccupied with alcohol or is craving alcohol and has had multiple failed treatments in the past. The relapse history often includes impulsive, unpremeditated use. Antabuse may also be court ordered. The oral loading dose is 500 mg/day for 2 weeks, followed by a daily maintenance dose of about 250 mg.
