In addition, various physical disorders can result from abuse of chemical substances. Examples of physical disorders caused by abuse of drugs include cirrhosis of the liver, organic brain damage, pancreatitis, and sexual dysfunction; it has not been related to diabetes. It has yet to be determined whether addiction to alcohol and other drugs is based on direct biological transmission or is a learned behavior in children who constantly interact with alcoholic or substance-abusing family members. Low self-esteem is often considered the most potent precipitating factor in substance abuse.
